In Memoriam – Bruce our happy cat
Bruce was killed by a car on Tuesday morning, 5 December 2006. He died instantly, and is now with his best friend and brother Little Bear, in heaven. We miss him very much.
To An Athlete Dying Young (for bruce)
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.
Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.
Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.
So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.
And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

People I admire - Robin Lee Graham
Graham's book "Dove" was given to me by my mother when i was 8 or 9 and it really impacted me. His story of sailing around the world as a teenager in the late 60s is still extraordinary. many young people have done this since, but none on such a little boat (24') and with only sextant, compass and, toward the end, radio. i basically started sailing because of that book.

People I admire - Charles Schultz
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolade and certificates are buried with their owners.
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care. Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life.

People I admire - Jimi Hendrix
“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
When i was 16, i took a few hendrix albums out of the library - "are you experienced", and "smash hits." i became a pretty avid fan, and ended up buying most of his albums, read books about him, and began to play guitar. Until that point i always thought of him as just another drug casualty of the 60s, but he was a real visionary musically, artistically and socially. he completely changed the face of rock guitar. if you've never seen his woodstock performances, you should check them out. i hear a hendrix woodstock DVD is coming out soon. what a shame he died.
